Ranchi, Dec 23: Veteran legislator of the Jharkhand State Assembly, CP Singh, has termed the anti-mob lynching bill, paased by the Assembly, as ‘uncalled for an exercise of appeasement’.
The six-term member of the legislative assembly expressed his concern and said that there are already provisions for anti-mob lynching in IPC and CRPC and hence, no such bill was needed.
“If the government had to bring the bill then it should have been tabled earlier so that the people would have got ample time to read the bill and propose amendments to it,” Singh said.
Supporting CP Singh’s statement, AJSU party MLA Lambodar Mahto said that it is good that the government has passed the bill but they will have to keep a check that it is not misused as it can easily be done according to the provisions of the bill.
“I personally believe that if the law and order situation in the state is perfect then this bill would not have been required. The law and order situation in the present government is very poor. The government should look forward towards securing the current scenario of murders and rape in the state to stop the mob-lynching,” Mahto said.
“The bill was presented on very short notice and it was passed within an hour which didn’t provide any time for deliberate discussion over it. However, if the government had released the bill one week before then everyone would have got the opportunity to review the bill and it would have been beneficial for the society as it would have different views and opinions in it,” Mahto further added.
After West Bengal and Rajasthan, Jharkhand became the third state in the country to pass a bill for preventing mob lynching incidents.
On Tuesday, the state assembly passed the Jharkhand (Prevention of Violence and Mob Lynching) Bill of 2021. The bill was introduced on the penultimate day of the ongoing winter session and was passed within an hour without any major amendments and debates.
