Lucknow, Sept 8: Officials said on Friday that Dinesh Sharma, a former Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, had been declared elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from the state because no other contender had submitted a nomination for the September 15 by-election.

The by-election was required following the passing of the sitting BJP MP, Hardwar Dubey. The term for the seat is set to last until November 2026.

“Dinesh Sharma has been declared elected unopposed,” Assistant Returning Officer Ajit Sharma said.

He said that other than Sharma, no other candidate had submitted nomination papers.

In a statement following his election without opposition, Sharma thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP national president J P Nadda, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, UP BJP chief Bhupendra Chaudhary, and BJP’s central and state leadership.

He further stated that he would do his best to uphold the faith that the party leadership had placed in him.

“Now the only goal will be to contribute to form the (BJP) government for the third time in 2024 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Centre. And, to establish an emerging India on top of the world under his leadership,” Sharma said.

“Schemes for the welfare of the poor are not being liked by the opposition parties who exploit the poor. This is the reason for their nervousness,” he added.
