Washington: Former U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton’s residence was raided by the FBI as part of an investigation linked to handling of classified documents. The raid comes just a day after Bolton sharply criticised former President Donald Trump for imposing punitive tariffs on India.

Raid Amid Political Tensions

According to the Associated Press, the FBI carried out the search in connection with an ongoing probe into management of sensitive documents. However, Bolton has neither been detained nor formally charged. The development is being viewed against the backdrop of his vocal criticism of Trump, making the raid politically significant.

Bolton’s Criticism of Tariffs

Just a day earlier, Bolton described Trump as an “eccentric president” in an interview, slamming his tariff policy. He argued that U.S.-India relations have worsened due to unfair targeting of India while China, despite being Russia’s biggest buyer of oil and gas, faced no such restrictions.

FBI Director’s Cryptic Post

No official statement has been released by the Trump administration. However, FBI Director Kash Patel’s cryptic social media post after the raid drew attention. “No one is above the law, FBI agents are on mission,” he wrote, hinting at the seriousness of the investigation.

Political Fallout

The raid is likely to intensify political debate, especially since Bolton has been one of Trump’s fiercest critics since leaving office. His stance on foreign policy and trade, particularly regarding India, may further complicate the already strained U.S.-India relations under Trump’s tariff measures.
