Guwahati: Torrential monsoon rains have unleashed destruction across several northeastern states, resulting in the deaths of at least 25 people and displacing thousands.
Assam bears the brunt of monsoon devastation
In Assam’s capital Guwahati, a deadly mudslide buried multiple homes, killing five people, including three from the same family. Floodwaters claimed three more lives in Golaghat and Lakhimpur. The state reported 17 districts hit by floods and landslides, affecting over 78,000 residents. More than 1,200 people are currently sheltered in five relief camps, with Lakhimpur emerging as the worst-hit district.
Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and others also hit
Arunachal Pradesh reported seven deaths after a vehicle was swept away by floodwaters. Two more people drowned in separate incidents, raising the state’s toll to nine. Meanwhile, Mizoram, Tripura, and Meghalaya collectively reported eight deaths due to a combination of landslides and flash flooding.
Manipur and Sikkim face chaos
In Manipur, Imphal city has been paralysed by three days of relentless rainfall. Authorities issued flood warnings and began evacuations near the Imphal River floodplains. In Sikkim, nearly 1,500 tourists were stranded in north Sikkim due to landslides. One tourist was killed and eight went missing after their vehicle plunged into the Teesta River in Mangan.
IMD issues fresh warnings as relief operations intensify
The India Meteorological Department has issued red and orange alerts for Assam and adjoining areas, warning of continued heavy rainfall. Relief operations are underway in all affected states. Teams from NDRF, SDRF, police, and fire services are evacuating residents and assessing damage, while schools remain shut and flight operations in Guwahati faced temporary disruption.
