New Delhi, July 20: PT Usha, a well-known former track and field Olympian, took the oath or affirmation of allegiance to the Constitution on Wednesday as a Rajya Sabha MP.
The government nominated Usha to the Upper House of Parliament with acclaimed composer Ilaiyaraaja, scriptwriter V Vijayendra Prasad, and spiritual leader Veerendra Heggade. This was considered as a part of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) push to southern India.
“Pilavullakandy Thekkeyaparambil Usha (Nominated) to make the prescribed oath or affirmation of allegiance to the Constitution,” mentions Rajya Sabha List of Business.
The central government just nominated Usha for the Rajya Sabha. She recently met J P Nadda, the head of the BJP, who wished her luck and congratulated her on her nomination as an Upper House MP.
Often referred to as the Payyoli Express, she has competed internationally for her nation and brought home medals in competitions like the Asian Games, Asian Championships, and the World Junior Invitational Meet. Throughout her career, she has broken and set a number of national and Asian records.
For many of young girls across the nation who wanted to pursue a career in athletics, particularly track and field events, Usha has served as an inspiration and role model.
