Ranchi: In a significant political development, Champai Soren, the former Chief Minister of Jharkhand and a veteran leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), is poised to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) this Friday. This was confirmed by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who shared the news in a late-night post on X (formerly Twitter), describing Soren as a “distinguished adivasi leader of the country.”
The 67-year-old Soren, who has been a pivotal figure in Jharkhand’s political landscape, had stepped down as Chief Minister earlier this year to pave the way for Hemant Soren, following his release from jail. Last week, Soren voiced his dissatisfaction with the JMM leadership, accusing them of disrespect and signaling his intention to explore new political avenues.
In a statement made shortly after his resignation, Champai Soren expressed his regret over not having more time to contribute to the state’s development. Known affectionately among party workers as the “Jharkhand Tiger” for his vital role in the struggle to create Jharkhand in the 1990s, Soren affirmed that he would not be retiring from politics. He also hinted at the possibility of forming a new political party, though his decision to join the BJP seems to have taken precedence.
Despite swirling rumors about his political future, Soren had initially downplayed speculation about a potential shift, asserting that he remained steadfast in his current position. However, his recent visit to Delhi, which he described as personal, only fueled further conjecture. The BJP, while not directly confirming his move at the time, acknowledged Soren’s contributions as a former Chief Minister and a respected leader in Jharkhand.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is BJP’s election in-charge for Jharkhand ahead of the upcoming state elections, expressed his eagerness for Soren to join the party, stating earlier today, “I want Champai Soren to join the BJP and strengthen us.” Hours later, Sarma shared a picture of Champai Soren meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, along with the official announcement of his joining date.
“Former Chief Minister of Jharkhand and a distinguished Adivasi leader of our country, @ChampaiSoren Ji met Hon’ble Union Home Minister @AmitShah Ji a short while ago. He will officially join the @BJP4India on 30th August in Ranchi,” Sarma posted.
Champai Soren, who took office as the 12th Chief Minister of Jharkhand on February 2 this year, resigned from the position on July 3, making way for Hemant Soren, who was sworn in as the 13th Chief Minister on July 4.
