New Delhi, May 5: Charanjit Singh Atwal, a former deputy speaker of the Lok Sabha, joined the BJP here on Friday in the presence of the party’s president, J. P. Nadda, giving the organisation a boost before the Jalandhar Lok Sabha byelection on May 10.
From 2004 to 2009, Atwal (86), who recently left the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), served as the deputy speaker of the Lok Sabha.
BJP candidate from Jalandhar Inder Iqbal Singh Atwal is his son. Prior to joining the BJP last month, Iqbal Singh Atwal was a member of the Akali Dal as well.
The Atwal family is a member of Punjab’s sizable Scheduled Caste community.
The BJP has deployed a number of Union ministers and other prominent officials to the campaign in an effort to make a good showing in the Lok Sabha constituency.
Additionally, the party has been working hard to win over Sikhs and has inducted many leaders from the group.
