Jamshedpur, Oct 19: With the grand Durga Puja at the doorstep, Mukesh Kumar Lunayat joined as City SP here on Thursday, thus increasing the strength of Jamshedpur police.
Lunayat had served the East Singhbhum district police as Rural SP for the past six months and had even taken additional charge as City SP during his stint here.
As of today, the post of City SP was being handled by the Rural SP, Rishabh Garg who handed over his charge to Lunayat on Thursday morning.
The timing of posting of Lunayat as City SP here in the steel city assumed significance as the Durga Puja has virtually started here.
As the grand Puja draws huge crowds of revellers on the streets across the city, the police have to maintain law and order as well as vehicular traffic during the Puja which is effectively celebrated for four days — from Maha Saptami till Maha Dashami, starting from October 21 till October 24.
Moreover, the Jamshedpur police are running without a full-time DSP (Traffic) despite the fact that the steel city is a place to have over five lakh two-wheelers and about one lakh four-wheelers besides a huge number of heavy vehicles.
DSP (CCR) Animesh Gupta who is holding additional charge as DSP (Traffic) while talking to lagatar24.com said the posting of the new City SP in the wake of Durga Puja is a great thing to happen for the Jamshedpur police.
