Ranchi, Sept 24: Cyber criminals defrauded Shobha Menon, a woman from Ernakulam, Kerala, of Rs 1 crore 12 lakh in one year in the name of winning a lottery worth Rs 1.5 crore. Realizing that she was cheated, Shobha Menon registered a case in Ernakulam, Kerala on 26 July 2023. The police involved in the investigation found clues about cyber criminals in Ranchi. Ernakulam Police of Kerala started investigating this fraud with the help of the technical cell and police of Sukhdevnagar police station of Ranchi. Based on the input received from the technical team and informants, the police conducted a raid at Vidyanagar of Sukhdevnagar police station area and arrested four accused.
The arrested accused include Jyotish Kumar, 23 years, Mohan Kumar, 21 years, Ajit Kumar, 25 years and Neeraj Kumar, 21 years. Among the arrested criminals, Jyotish Kumar, Mohan Kumar, Ajit Kumar, all three are residents of Chakwai police station’s Warisaliganj area of Nawada district (Bihar). Neeraj Kumar is a resident of Irgu Toli Bagan Chowk of Kishoreganj, Ranchi. 45 ATM cards, 23 smartphones, 30 bank passbooks, about one lakh rupees in cash and three bikes including a BMW and an Indica car were recovered from the arrested accused.
During the police interrogation, the accused individuals revealed that they used to deceive people by promising lottery winnings or other temptations and then swindled them out of their money. These criminals open bank accounts in various states based on fake documents to transfer the swindled money. They then facilitate the transfer of the stolen money into these accounts and withdraw the money from various ATMs in Ranchi. Some members of this gang charge an additional twenty thousand rupees per bank account by opening accounts in different states.
The arrested criminals have divulged various details in front of the police. Based on the information gathered, the police team is proceeding with further action.
