Tarakeshwar (Hooghly): A four-year-old girl was found severely injured and bleeding near a drain close to Tarakeshwar railway station early Saturday morning, triggering outrage and protests in the area. The child, who lived with her grandparents, was allegedly abducted while sleeping after the attacker cut through a mosquito net. She was discovered a few hundred meters from the station with multiple injuries.
Grandfather Arrested After Police Investigation
Authorities confirmed that the girl’s grandfather has been arrested in connection with the abduction and assault. Initially treated and discharged from Tarakeshwar Rural Hospital, the child was later readmitted for a medico-legal examination after her family claimed she had been raped. Police reopened the investigation following the family’s allegations and public pressure.
Public Anger and Political Protests Over Delayed Action
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged protests outside the Tarakeshwar police station, accusing law enforcement of delayed and inadequate response despite visible signs of injury. Residents claimed the girl went missing around 4 a.m. and was found seven hours later, but police allegedly dismissed the report at first. The Hooghly (Rural) police have stated they will release updates on the case by 4 p.m. on Sunday.
