Ranchi, July 24: A case of using the profile photo of the Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court to dupe people has come to light recently. The Central Project Coordinator, Rajiv Kumar Sinha who is currently posted in the High Court, has lodged an FIR at Doranda police station regarding this.
Taking action in this case, the police have arrested an accused and also recovered one and a half lakh rupees from him. According to the FIR lodged, on the evening of July 19, at 5:41 pm, Sinha received a missed call from a number on his office mobile number.
The caller id displayed for the number was that of the Chief Justice. After this Sinha made a WhatsApp call on the said number, which was not picked up. After that at 5:42, he started getting continuous WhatsApp messages from the same number wherein the sender instructed Sinha to keep busy in essential meetings and take very few calls. Along with this, another message was sent stating that the caller was busy. Then he got a message on Amazon to buy 15 gift cards of Rs 10000.
Rajiv Sinha, on the other hand, believed that the Chief Justice was instructing him to pay for the 15 gift cards. Sinha further paid Rs 1.5 lakh from his SBI savings account through internet banking.
He sent the information of all the 15 links that came after the payment on WhatsApp of the said number. When he received a similar message to buy 50 gift cards of the same amount, he grew suspicious.
Sinha then checked the number with Truecaller, through which he realized that the number was registered in someone else’s name. Sinha then informed the SSP Ranchi in this regard.
The SSP immediately gave a copy of the FIR to the cyber cell and directed them to register an FIR at the Doranda police station. An FIR of fraud has been registered against the said number in the Doranda police station. An FIR has been registered in this case under sections 419, 420 of Bhadvi and IT Act 66C and 66D.
