New Delhi, Feb 24: The Supreme Court has declared that Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s new film Gangubai Kathiawadi would be released on schedule tomorrow.
The apex court has dismissed a suit by Babu Ravji Shah, who claims to be the genuine Gangubai’s adoptive son, that the film is defamatory; the Bombay High Court had ruled that Shah could not show he was the late Gangubai’s adopted son.
The Supreme Court was also advised by Bhansali’s counsel that a name change, as suggested by the court yesterday, was not conceivable.
In view of various court actions aiming to prevent its dissemination, the Supreme Court advised a title change on Wednesday. Siddhartha Dave, Bhansali Productions’ lawyer, had told the court that he will consult with his client about the suggestion. He claimed today that changing the title was unfeasible because the film is set to be released tomorrow and has already been promoted under its current title.
Several lawsuits have been filed against the film, with the goal of preventing its release. Gangubai Kathaiwadi is based on a real-life sex worker who rose to political prominence in Mumbai’s Kamathipura neighbourhood. Apart from Babu Ravji Shah’s case, Maharashtra MLA Amin Patel and Kamathipura resident Shraddha Surve have also filed one, according to reports.
