Ranchi, Mar 24: German Ambassador Walter J Lindner, during his visit to the state capital visited Ranchi University’s Journalism department on Thursday to interact with the students. He was accompanied by General Manfred Auster, the Consulate General of Germany from Kolkata. Students present on the occasion interacted with the guests and enquired about.
Ambassador Lindner while interacting with students said, “In present times, there is a need for serious journalists because they have the power to bring about social change. This is why journalism has been said to be the fourth pillar of a democratic nation. A journalist’s first and foremost responsibility is honest journalism. One needs to verify any kind of information and fact check it and not rely on just one source.
He further added, “In the age of social media, people are reading newspaper way less. Due to this, misinformation spreads rapidly. Newspaper, on the other hand, has always been an effective medium for mass communication. Students should prepare themselves for newspaper journalism. There are many languages in the country and abroad, so there will be no dearth of opportunities.”
Discussing Sanskrit and its importance, he said, “It is taught as a subject schools in Germany. The reason for this is its grammar and expresses culture. It is one of the rich languages.
Talking of the Student exchange Programme Ambassador Lindner said, “More than 30 thousand Indian students opt for Germany for higher and technical education. Under the Student Exchange Program, student benefit from the ‘German Academic Excellence Service’. Students successful in the examination are given education free of cost in Germany. The student need only pay for housing and food.
“People should actively participate in various activities. It helps a person to become serious, philosophical and knowledgeable. Music is most useful in this,” the German ambassador added while talking of extracurricular activities on the occasion.
Ranchi University Vice Chancellor Dr. Kamini Kumar, Registrar Dr. MC Mehta, Director of Journalism Dr. Vishnu Charan Mahto, Director Dr. DK Sahai were present on the occasion along with other members of the department.
