Dhanbad, May 11: Giridih police have arrested hardcore Naxal Jitlal Marandi from Tesafuli village under Madhuban police station, around 88 km away from district headquarters at the wee hour of Wednesday.
A senior police officer said that a special team under the additional superintendent of police (campaign) Gulshan Tirkey raided the village and managed to arrest Jitlal.
During interrogation, Jitlal informed the police that Naxal Krishna Marandi along with other members was holding a meeting in Bandkharo village of Nimiaghat.
The police conducted another raid in Bandkharo village but the members of the banned organization managed to escape before the security personnel arrived. Police recovered food materials from the spot.
A joint team of CRPF, Madhuban police station and Nimiaghat police station swung into action after Giridih superintendent of police Amit Renu got information that Jitlal Marandi was camping in Tesafuli. Jitlal Marandi was caught while napping.
The arrest of Jitlal Marandi is considered a prize catch for Giridih police that has pushed them on the backfoot with continuous raids in the forest region of the district.
However, officials at Giridih police headquarters refused to confirm the arrest of Jitlal Marandi officially by saying that only the superintendent of police would make an official comment on it.
Sources said Naxals were planning to disturb Panchayat elections in the district. This arrest would help in checking their movement.
