New Delhi: In a significant political move, the government has declared that June 25 will be observed annually as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ (Constitution Killing Day) to mark the imposition of the Emergency in 1975 by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The announcement, made by Home Minister Amit Shah, aims to honor the sacrifices of those who suffered during this dark period in Indian history.
“On June 25, 1975, the then PM Indira Gandhi, in a brazen display of a dictatorial mindset, strangled the soul of our democracy by imposing the Emergency on the nation,” Shah posted on X (formerly Twitter), alongside a gazette notification. “Lakhs of people were thrown behind bars for no fault of their own, and the voice of the media was silenced.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took to X, underscoring the significance of this day as a stark reminder of the dangers posed when constitutional principles are undermined. “To observe June 25 as #SamvidhaanHatyaDiwas will serve as a reminder of what happens when the Constitution of India is trampled over. It is also a day to pay homage to each and every person who suffered due to the excesses of the Emergency,” he wrote.
Throughout Modi’s tenure, the BJP has faced criticism from Congress and other opposition parties, who accuse the ruling party of eroding constitutional values and weakening key institutions. This declaration appears to be part of a broader narrative to remind the public of past constitutional violations by the Congress.
The announcement comes in a politically charged atmosphere, as the nation gears up for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The opposition, now unified under the INDIA alliance, has seized on remarks by BJP leaders suggesting potential constitutional amendments as evidence of an agenda to dismantle existing constitutional safeguards, particularly around reservations.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and his allies have been vocal about protecting the Constitution, frequently carrying copies of the document at public appearances and emphasizing their commitment to its principles.
As the INDIA narrative gains traction, the BJP and the government have countered by asserting that the opposition is spreading misinformation. The declaration of ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ serves to reinforce the BJP’s position on upholding democratic values while reminding voters of the historical context of the 1975 Emergency.
The new commemorative day aims to educate future generations about the importance of safeguarding democracy and constitutional integrity, while acknowledging the suffering endured by many during the Emergency period.
