New Delhi: In an unusual but commendable move, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has taken to social media to urge his supporters to maintain a respectful tone and avoid being “nasty” towards former Union Minister Smriti Irani. This comes after Irani’s defeat by a significant margin to Congress candidate Kishori Lal Sharma in Amethi during the recent general elections.
On Friday, Mr. Gandhi posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Winning and losing happen in life. I urge everyone to refrain from using derogatory language and being nasty towards Smt. Smriti Irani or any other leader for that matter. Humiliating and insulting people is a sign of weakness, not strength.”
The appeal follows a period of heightened political tensions, with Ms. Irani previously taking a dig at the Gandhis, remarking that “an ordinary BJP worker had sent the Gandhi family packing.” Despite her earlier victory against Mr. Gandhi in Amethi by over 55,000 votes in 2019, she was unseated by Sharma, who garnered a victory margin of over 1.6 lakh votes.
While the exact incident that prompted Gandhi’s appeal remains unclear, it aligns with his broader vision of fostering a more compassionate and respectful political environment. He has consistently advocated for a politics of love and understanding, famously referring to his efforts as opening a “mohabbat ki dukaan” (shop of love) amidst what he describes as an atmosphere of hatred.
Prior to the elections, there was speculation that Rahul Gandhi might contest against Smriti Irani from the traditional family stronghold of Amethi in 2024, while his sister Priyanka Gandhi would run from Rae Bareli. However, Rahul Gandhi chose to contest from Wayanad in Kerala and Rae Bareli, leaving Kishori Lal Sharma to challenge Irani in Amethi.
Ms. Irani, the former Union Minister for Women and Child Development, responded to Sharma’s candidacy with characteristic defiance, interpreting the Gandhis’ decision not to contest in Amethi as a sign of the Congress party’s anticipated defeat. Following her unexpected defeat, she expressed gratitude to her supporters and maintained a positive outlook.
“Such is life… A decade of my life going from one village to another, building lives, nurturing hope & aspirations, working on infrastructure – roads, naali, khadanja, bypass, medical college, and more. To those who stood by me through loss and victory, I am forever grateful. To those celebrating today, congratulations. And to those asking, ‘How’s the josh?’ I say – it’s still high, Sir,” she posted on X.
Rahul Gandhi’s call for a respectful political discourse highlights the need for civility and respect, even amidst fierce electoral battles. As the political landscape in India continues to evolve, such gestures may contribute to a healthier and more respectful democratic process.
