Guwahati, Jan 1: Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, said today that the administration will take pragmatic efforts to implement the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act.
“There will be some positive moments regarding Armed Forces (Special Power) Act. How and when we don’t know. But I am optimistic,” CM Sarma said at a press conference in Guwahati.
After four months, Assam’s Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act will be up for renewal.
The BJP leader stated that the Centre has constituted a panel that will provide a report in 45 days on the AFSPA in Nagaland. He stated that they were looking for a favourable outcome following the release of the report.
Assam’s Chief Minister declared that the state’s age of tribal militancy has come to an end, with factions approaching the administration for discussions.
Sarma also stated that the ULFA(I)’s demand for a sovereignty discussion was a stumbling block, and that his government is working to break the impasse.
Assam’s Chief Minister stated that the Northeast’s urgent challenges will have a positive outcome. The chief minister stated that 2022 is a year of hope for him.
“There were many vexed issues in the Northeast, for past couple of years under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi we have seen three major issues have been resolved – the Bru refugees settlement, the Karbi Accord and the new Bodo accord,” CM Sarma further said.
