New Delhi, Jan 1: Israel is said to have recorded the first instance of Florona, which is thought to be a double infection of Covid-19 and influenza infection.
The first occurrence of this, according to sources, occurred this week in a pregnant woman who was admitted to the Rabin Medical Centre to give birth. The young woman had not been vaccinated, according to the Israeli publication Yedioth Ahronoth.
Florona’s discovery comes as the world battles a new wave of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic, fueled by the novel strain Omicron, which was originally discovered in South Africa in November 2021. In the United States and the United Kingdom, the fast-transmissible form has already surpassed the preceding type Delta.
Florona, on the other hand, is not a new variety, as it is thought to be the occurrence of flu and corona at the same time. Florona is being researched, according to Israeli doctors, as the country has observed an increase in influenza infections in recent weeks.
Florona may suggest a serious failure of the immune system, according to Dr Nahla Abdel Wahab of Cairo University Hospital, who told Israeli media that two viruses are invading the human body at the same time.
On Friday, December 31, 2021, Israel began providing fourth vaccine injections against Covid-19 to those with weakened immune systems.
Delmicron, a hybrid of Delta and Omicron types, has also been identified as a possible reason of the spike in the US and Europe, according to experts. Delmicron is also not a novel type, but rather a combination of Delta and Omicron strains. Moderna’s chief medical officer, Dr. Paul Burton, commented on Delmicron, saying that both strains could swap genes and cause a more deadly variety to emerge.
“There’s certainly data, there have been some papers published again from South Africa earlier from the pandemic when people – and certainly immunocompromised people – can harbour both viruses,” Burton was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.
