Chennai: A major confrontation unfolded in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Tuesday when Governor R N Ravi staged a walkout even before delivering his inaugural address, alleging disrespect to the National Anthem and obstruction during his speech.
Governor Alleges Disrespect and Interruption
After leaving the House, Governor Ravi expressed strong displeasure before the media, claiming that the National Anthem was not accorded due respect during the Assembly proceedings. He further alleged that his microphone was deliberately switched off, preventing him from presenting his views to the House, and that repeated interruptions were made during his address.
Speaker Rejects Allegations
Assembly Speaker M Appavu dismissed the Governor’s claims and advised him to adhere to the traditions, rules, and constitutional conventions of the legislature. The Speaker stated that Assembly proceedings are conducted strictly as per established procedures and all constitutional authorities are expected to respect them.
Raj Bhavan Issues Official Statement
Subsequently, Raj Bhavan released an official press note reiterating that the Governor was repeatedly stopped from speaking and that his microphone was intentionally muted. The statement also alleged that serious issues such as atrocities against Dalits and rising incidents of sexual violence against Dalit women were ignored in the address.
Recurring Tension Between Governor and State Government
The statement once again accused the Assembly of disrespecting the National Anthem. Tensions between Governor R N Ravi and the Tamil Nadu government are not new, as similar confrontations were witnessed last year when the Governor walked out of the House alleging disrespect to the Constitution and the National Anthem.
