New Delhi, April 5: Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and IT, informed the Lok Sabha on Wednesday that the government has no intention of using Aadhaar data for the census.

“The Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India has informed that there is no plan to use Aadhaar data for census,” he said in a written reply.

Up to the end of February, the Unique Identification Authority of India issued more than 136 crore Aadhaar numbers.

In response to a query from Congress member Adoor Prakash, Chandrasekhar stated that “… after adjusting for the estimated number of deaths, the estimated number of living Aadhaar number holders is 130.2 crore, which is over 94 per cent of the total projected population for 2022.”

The minister further stated that there is no mechanism in place to obtain the Aadhaar numbers of deceased individuals from the Registrars chosen by state governments to handle birth and death registrations in accordance with the provisions of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, and deactivate those Aadhaar numbers.
