Bihar: In a landmark moment for Bihar’s religious and cultural heritage, Union Home Minister Amit Shah laid the foundation stone for the grand Sita Temple at Punauradham in Sitamarhi. The ceremony, held with Vedic chants, was attended by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary, Speaker Vijay Kumar Sinha, and several senior ministers of the Bihar government.
Punauradham Set for Global Recognition
Recognised in Hindu tradition as the birthplace of Goddess Sita, Punauradham has long been a revered pilgrimage site. The temple complex is being developed as an international religious tourism destination, with construction targeted for completion in 42 weeks.
Modern Complex Spanning 67 Acres
The sprawling 67-acre complex will feature a 151-foot-tall main temple, a yajna mandap, Sita museum, modern auditorium, cafeteria, dharmashala, Sita Vatika, Lav-Kush Vatika, children’s play area, parking facilities, a circumambulation path, and exhibition spaces.
Project Cost and Timeline
The total project cost is estimated at ₹882.87 crore, with ₹137.34 crore allocated for the main temple structure. The Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation is overseeing the work, with land acquisition nearly complete and tender processes underway. Officials aim to inaugurate the temple in the Shravan month next year.
Boost to Tourism and Economy
The project is expected to enhance religious tourism, create employment, and drive local economic growth. Existing landmarks like Maa Janaki Kund will also be beautified, ensuring global recognition for Bihar’s rich cultural heritage.
