Ahmedabad, August 11: The criminal defamation proceedings brought against Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national leader Arvind Kejriwal and the party’s Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh over their allegedly defamatory statements against Gujarat University were denied an interim stay by the Gujarat High Court on Friday.

On the appeal made in the Gujarat High Court by the legal team of Arvind Kejriwal and Sanjay Singh, Justice Sameer Dave rejected a stay. The lower court will resume hearing the case as Kejriwal and Singh were given summons for Friday.

The hearing will now go according to the schedule. If Kejriwal and Sanjay Singh don’t show up in court today, the complainant (Gujarat University) requested that a bailable warrant be issued against both of them.

Kejriwal and Sanjay Singh are being sued for criminal defamation in Ahmedabad. They received a summons to show up in court on August 11 before the Metropolitan court.

Kejriwal and Sanjay Singh petitioned the Gujarat High Court for a stay of the defamation case after receiving their summons. This stay was requested so they may contest the Metropolitan court’s summons until the Sessions court rules on another application they filed.

Their request to stay the trial’s proceedings while their new plea was being considered was denied by the City Civil & Sessions Court of Ahmedabad on August 5.

The Chief Information Commission (CIC) ruling had previously been overturned by the Gujarat High Court on March 31. As a result, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) was not required to provide the degree and postgraduate degree certificates of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, was also charged Rs. 25,000 by the High Court for his request for information regarding the Prime Minister’s degree certificate.
