NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is all set to form the government in Haryana for a third consecutive term, as trends indicate the party leading in a significant number of constituencies. The BJP’s aggressive campaign, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, helped consolidate non-Jaat, non-Muslim, and Other Backward Class (OBC) votes, securing them a dominant position in the state.
Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who contested from Ladwa, has claimed victory, while other prominent BJP candidates such as Mukesh Sharma and Moolchand Sharma are leading from their respective constituencies. This marks a critical victory for the BJP in retaining power in Haryana.
BJP’s Miraculous Recovery After Early Trends
Despite initial exit polls suggesting a loss for the BJP, the party has made an impressive comeback. Early trends showed the BJP trailing, but by the end of the day, they secured a lead in 50 seats in the 90-member Haryana Assembly. In comparison, the Congress managed to secure 35 seats, significantly behind the majority.
Haryana Polls: The Decline of Chautala Magic
Once a political powerhouse, Dushyant Singh Chautala of the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) has seen his influence wane, with Chautala trailing in his constituency of Uchana Kalan. The JJP, which fought the election in alliance with the Azad Samaj Party (ASP), failed to make an impact as most of its leaders struggled to gain a lead.
Key Congress Wins: Bhupinder Hooda and Vinesh Phogat Shine
Former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, a senior leader in the Congress, retained his Garhi Sampla-Kiloi seat with a large margin of 71,465 votes. First-time contestant Vinesh Phogat, a renowned wrestler, also made her mark by winning the Julana seat for the Congress.
Independent Candidates: Savitri Jindal and Devender Kadyan Lead the Charge
Savitri Jindal, India’s richest woman and a former BJP leader, secured a victory from the Hisar constituency, contesting as an independent candidate. Meanwhile, Devender Kadyan also won as an independent from Ganaur.
