New Delhi, Jan 1: The Chandigarh police on Sunday registered a case of sexual harassment and criminal intimidation against Haryana Sports Minister Sandeep Singh after a junior athletics coach filed a complaint against him on Friday.

A case under Sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354-A (sexual harassment), 354-B (assault or criminal force to woman with intent of disrobing), 342 (wrongful confinement) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC were registered against Sandeep Singh.

The woman held a press conference at the office of the opposition party Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) to urge the Manohar Lal Khattar government to immediately sack Sandeep Singh and set up a Special Investigation Team to investigate the matter. The complainant has also demanded security.

The lady coach had alleged that Sandeep Singh contacted her on Instagram after first seeing her at a gym. The coach also claimed that the minister later kept insisting that they meet up.

“He messaged me on Instagram and said my national games certificate is pending and wanted to meet in this regard. Unfortunately, my certificate has been misplaced by my federation and I have been taking it up with the authorities concerned,” she said.

The woman eventually agreed to meet the minister, but when she went there with some documents, Sandeep Singh indulged in sexual misconduct.

Earlier, the minister had dismissed the allegations as baseless and called for an independent inquiry.
