Health journalism workshop on Lymphatic Filariasis Reporting inaugurated at CUJ

Ranchi, Aug 4: A two-day workshop on health journalism, “Reporting on Lymphatic Filariasis: Challenges and Solutions,” was inaugurated at the Central University of Jharkhand’s Brambe campus today. The workshop was organised under the joint aegis of NGOs associated with the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme in collaboration with the Department of Mass Communication, Central University of Jharkhand. This programme is getting support from NGO partners like the NVBDCP, the Government of India, and the Ministry of Health. The first day of the programme started with the inaugural session, which was followed by three sessions related to journals.

The first session was organised by a senior journalist and social worker, Mr Madhukar. He discussed the health and health status of Jharkhand. Along with this, he also discussed the negative impact on health due to the extinction of natural resources. When talking about indigenous knowledge traditions, he highlighted their importance. He threw light on the seriousness of elephantiasis, followed by a question and answer session related to the topic.

The second session of the programme was hosted by Rajkamal Choudhary, Editor, Zee Media, and Channel Head, Zee Jharkhand and Bihar. He discussed the topic “Tools and Techniques of Health Reporting”. He highlighted the importance of knowledge about health-related terminology in reporting. He also said that it is necessary to check facts before writing a health-related report, and reporters should be more accountable and responsible as it affects people more than any other news content.

The third session was organised by documentary filmmaker and writer Shivani Pandey, where she explained in detail about filariasis, talked about the presentation of filariasis in film and media, and showed the seriousness of filariasis through film. At the end of the session, all the participants asked questions related to health journalism.

The inaugural address of the workshop was delivered by Professor Dev Vrat Singh, Department of Mass Communication, Central University of Jharkhand.

Assistant Professors of the Mass Communication Department Dr Sudarshan Yadav, Dr Rajesh Kumar, Dr Amrit Kumar and Rashmi Verma along with Technical Assistants Ram Niwas Suthar and Ajenga Pamei were present during the programme. The programme was conducted by Puja Kumari and Pooja Pathak, PhD Scholars in the Department of Mass Communication. About 100 students from the Department of Mass Communication were present.
