New Delhi: Early morning heavy rains in Delhi have brought the city to a standstill, causing widespread waterlogging and severe disruptions in daily life. Major roads, including Minto Bridge, IP Marg, Mundka, Mangi Bridge, and several others, were submerged, leading to chaos for commuters.
The Delhi Traffic Police quickly issued an advisory, urging residents to avoid the waterlogged areas and plan their routes accordingly. “Traffic is affected on New Rohtak Road on both carriageways due to waterlogging at Anand Parvat. Kindly plan your journey accordingly,” the advisory warned.
In one of the most striking incidents, an autorickshaw was almost entirely submerged on Delhi’s Minto Bridge. The driver, Munil Mehto, recounted his experience, saying, “My vehicle suddenly stopped. I asked a few drivers to help me. I came out of the auto to save my life. The vehicle’s papers are still in it.”
Videos shared by residents on social media captured the extent of the flooding, with vehicles struggling to navigate the submerged streets. One resident commented, “Just another day in Delhi,” while another posted, “Heavy rainfall drenches parts of Delhi.”
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Central and East Delhi recorded moderate to intense rainfall, measuring 1-3 cm per hour. The IMD had initially issued an ‘orange’ alert but later downgraded it to a ‘yellow’ alert for the entire Delhi-NCR region as of 8 am.
The IMD also issued warnings for heavy rainfall in other parts of India, including isolated areas in Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh, which are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rain.
