Mumbai: Continuous heavy rainfall across Maharashtra has caused flooding, disrupted transport, and claimed at least six lives. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, and nearby districts, while Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis warned that the next 48 hours would be crucial.

Fatalities and Flooding Reported

According to officials, at least six people have died and hundreds have been displaced due to flooding, crop damage, and road blockages. In Mumbai, a 75-year-old man was killed when a compound wall collapsed, while another man died of electrocution in Kanjurmarg. Meanwhile, Nanded district emerged as one of the worst-hit, where eight people reportedly lost their lives in a cloudburst-like situation and over 290 people had to be rescued.

Transport and Daily Life Disrupted

Mumbai’s lifeline—the local trains—faced major suspension. The Central Railway stopped harbour line services between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Kurla due to submerged tracks. Schools, colleges, and government offices were shut, while private offices were advised to allow employees to work from home. Flooding along the Mithi River worsened the situation, leading to evacuations in densely populated areas like Kurla and Sakinaka.

Rainfall Data and Regional Impact

The state received exceptionally heavy rainfall, with Mumbai recording 300 mm in just 24 hours and 500 mm over 84 hours. In western Maharashtra, the Radhanagari dam in Kolhapur released 11,500 cusecs of water, pushing the Panchganga River above danger levels for the fifth time this season. In Konkan, Raigad’s Roha taluka recorded more than 160 mm of rainfall, forcing the administration to declare a holiday for all schools and colleges.

Weather Alerts for Coming Days

The IMD has forecast intense rainfall over the next two days for Konkan and central Maharashtra. A red alert has been issued for Pune, while Marathwada and Vidarbha are under orange alert, expected to shift to yellow later this week. Authorities continue to urge citizens to take precautions as the situation develops.
