Bengaluru, Oct 13: Following a split decision by the Supreme Court on the matter, Karnataka’s Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, B C Nagesh, said on Thursday that the Karnataka High Court order upholding the state government’s ban on wearing the hijab on school and college campuses will continue to be enforceable.
“We welcome Supreme Court verdict. We had expected a better judgement as women worldwide are demanding to not wear hijab/burqa. Karnataka HC order remains applicable in interim time; ban on wearing of hijab in educational institutions of the state remains,” said Karnataka minister BC Nagesh.

Notably, on a group of appeals challenging the Karnataka High Court decision refusing to abolish the hijab prohibition in the state’s educational institutions, the Supreme Court issued a divided decision on Thursday.
Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia permitted the appeals against the high court’s decision, but Justice Hemant Gupta dismissed them. The Karnataka government had anticipated a better decision that will bring order to the education system at a time when there is a movement against the hijab and veil taking place around the world and the freedom of women is a hot topic, but a split ruling has come, Nagesh told reporters.
Nagesh stated that the petition has now been forwarded to a higher bench, adding that the Karnataka government will await the decision of a higher bench.
