The hijab issue began in Karnataka in December-end, when a few girls from a government pre-university college in Udupi were forced to leave because they were wearing headscarves to class.
The issue then spread across the state, prompting young people backed by right-wing groups to respond by donning saffron scarves.
The Karnataka government on Tuesday declared a three-day holiday for the institutions after the protests took a violent turn at some places earlier this week.
