New Delhi, Feb 12: In the midst of a global outrage over the hijab row, India said today that politically motivated comments on domestic problems are not welcome.

Muslim students at numerous colleges in Karnataka are requesting that they be allowed to attend lessons while wearing a headscarf.

Karnataka was recently chastised by a US government body that monitors and reports on religious freedom around the world.

The hijab issue began in Karnataka in December-end, when a few girls from a government pre-university college in Udupi were forced to leave because they were wearing headscarves to class.

The issue then spread across the state, prompting young people backed by right-wing groups to respond by donning saffron scarves.

The Karnataka government on Tuesday declared a three-day holiday for the institutions after the protests took a violent turn at some places earlier this week.
