Shimla: In a move aimed at ensuring transparency and food safety, Himachal Pradesh will soon require restaurants and eateries to display the names of their owners and staff, following a similar directive issued in neighboring Uttar Pradesh. The Congress-led government in the state has decided to roll out this initiative, starting with Shimla. The time before implementation will be used for preparations, including the issuance of identity cards for staff members.

Urban Development Minister Vikramaditya Singh confirmed the decision, stating, “We have decided to strictly enforce the rules in the state, much like Uttar Pradesh. This is to ensure the supply of hygienic food to the public.” The decision was made following a meeting between the Urban Development Ministry and the Municipal Corporation, addressing concerns over the quality and safety of food served at local eateries and food stalls.

Inspiration from Uttar Pradesh

This move follows a similar initiative by the Uttar Pradesh government, which earlier this year mandated that eateries along the Kanwar Yatra routes display the names of their owners, managers, and staff. The UP government defended its decision, stating it promoted transparency and allowed consumers to make informed choices, especially amid allegations of unsanitary practices at food stalls.

Concerns Over Food Safety

The Himachal Pradesh government’s decision comes after alarming reports from Uttar Pradesh of unsanitary practices in food establishments, including incidents where human waste was reportedly mixed with food. A viral video of a teenager spitting on rotis at an eatery in Saharanpur and other similar cases in Noida and Ghaziabad have raised concerns about food safety.

In Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also mandated that chefs and waiters wear masks and gloves, and ordered the installation of CCTV cameras in all hotels and restaurants to monitor hygiene practices.

Himachal Pradesh’s new regulations are expected to bring similar hygiene standards to eateries across the state, ensuring greater accountability and protection for consumers.
