New Delhi: Shantanu Naidu, the youngest general manager at Tata Trusts and a close associate of Ratan Tata, paid a deeply emotional tribute to the iconic industrialist, referring to him as his “dear lighthouse.” Tata, who passed away at the age of 86 on Wednesday, left behind a lasting impact on Naidu, as well as countless others.
A Tribute to a Mentor
In a heartfelt post shared on LinkedIn, 30-year-old Shantanu Naidu expressed the deep void left by Tata’s passing, vowing to spend the rest of his life trying to fill it. “Grief is the price to pay for love. Goodbye, my dear lighthouse,” Naidu wrote, mourning the loss of a man he called a friend and mentor.
A Friendship Rooted in Compassion
Their unique friendship began in 2014 when Naidu, then an engineering intern, created reflective collars to protect stray dogs from road accidents at night. Impressed by Naidu’s initiative and their shared love for animals, Ratan Tata invited him to work for him. This mutual passion for animal welfare deepened their bond, which transcended the usual boundaries of age and position.
Ratan Tata’s Lifelong Love for Dogs
Ratan Tata’s compassion for animals, particularly dogs, was well-known. He had a special bond with his pets, and his affection for stray dogs was evident throughout his life. From founding the Small Animal Hospital Mumbai (SAHM) to promoting the adoption of strays, Tata’s dedication to animal welfare was unwavering. His love for dogs shaped his personal and professional life, with Tata Group offices offering shelter and care for stray dogs, a testament to his respect for animals.
An Unlikely Yet Powerful Bond
Despite their age difference, Naidu and Tata shared a close friendship that bridged generations. In video footage shared by Tata Power, Naidu explored how Tata’s ethics and principles ran deep within the conglomerate, influencing generations of leaders.
Tributes Pour In for Ratan Tata
In addition to Naidu’s tribute, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his own words of respect for Tata on social media, calling him a “visionary business leader” and “an extraordinary human being.” PM Modi reflected on Tata’s leadership, compassion, and his relentless drive to make society better.
Ratan Tata’s passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy will live on through his contributions to industry, philanthropy, and the values he instilled in those who had the privilege of knowing him.
