IIT ISM Dhanbad, BIS hold meet to explore eco-system of standards

Dhanbad, March 24: IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad on Friday held a joint workshop with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for exploring the eco-system of standards and collaboration opportunities.

Former Deputy Director General and presently, a consultant, J Roy Chowdhary while speaking as chief speaker in the workshop highlighted the evaluation of BIS and shed some light on the Standards National Action Plan (SNAP) with an emphasis on drivers of future standardization in the sphere of future national standardization.

The workshop on collaboration between IIT ISM and BIS was organized at the conference hall of the Department of Management Studies & Industrial Engineering (DMSIE) in which J Roy Chowdhary pointed out the need, benefits and the eco-system of standards and collaboration opportunities with BIS. He discussed the need for collaborations and opportunities for active participation by students, research scholars and faculty of IITs.

“We are the largest standardization organization in the world,” said Roy Chowdhury while giving details of certification of gold and silver jewellery of different jewellers from across the country which is being carried out by BIS.

Over the existing laboratories, he said that BIS owns eight laboratories situated across the country while it has networked with over 550 other laboratories, 287 of which are private laboratories engaged in testing work while others are laboratories of government organizations including laboratories of IITs.

Prof MK Singh, dean of student welfare (DSW) of IIT (ISM) who is also a director in charge of the institute highlighted the legacy and achievements of the IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and thanked BIS for their collaboration and signing memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Institute.

Prof Sarat Das, head of the department of civil engineering who coordinated the programme, introduced the collaboration between IIT ISM and BIS to the participants of the workshop comprising students and faculty members from different departments of IIT ISM.
