Dhanbad, June 27: Prof Bhabesh C Sarkar of IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad has got the prestigious national ‘Excellence Service Award 2022’ for his extraordinary contribution to the field of mining engineering as well as the mining industry of the country.
Mineral Engineering Association of India (MEAI) National Chairman K Madhusudhana and General Secretary M Narsaiah presented the national award to Prof Bhabesh C Sarkar of IIT ISM at the 49th annual general meeting held in Bangalore on Sunday evening. Immediate MEAI past chairman Sanjay Patnaik was also present at the award ceremony.
Prof Sarkar, senior professor in the Department of Applied Geology at IIT ISM has been given the award for his extraordinary services in rendered to the mining industry of the country and the mining engineering field for over four decades so far.
The IIT ISM professor has been given the ‘Excellence Service Award’ for his mineral exploration, mineral reserves reporting, development of mineral inventory, mine planning and design, and mine grade control using geostatistics, simulation, artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Recently, Prof Sarkar was elected chairman of MEAI Dhanbad district chapter replacing senior scientist Dr P K Singh, former director of Central Institute of Mineral Fuel Research (CIMFR).
Prof Sarkar, who completed his PhD and DIC from London, has authored a large number of quality research papers and books on technical education, industry and academics.
He has also served Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited (MECL) in 1980-81, Hindustan Zinc Limited (1981-89) and as director of All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. He joined the then Indian School of Mines (ISM) in 1989.
In March last year, IIT Kharagpur presented him Alumnus Award.
