IIT ISM Dhanbad to set up Hydrogen Valley at Nirsa campus

Dhanbad, May 17: IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad has started a process to set up the Hydrogen Valley Innovation Cluster (HVIC) at its Nirsa-based campus to achieve national green hydrogen mission target of 5 MMT hydrogen production per annum by 2030.

IIT ISM while rolling out the project on Wednesday said that the proposed HVIC would help in fulfilling the nation’s aim of becoming energy efficient by 2047 and achieving net zero by 2070.

HVIC is being set up by a team of the Centre for Hydrogen and Carbon Capture Storage and Utilization Technologies (CHCCUST).

Prof Sandipan Kumar Das of the mechanical engineering department at IIT (ISM), who is also head of CHCCUST, said that the Hydrogen Valleys are basically geographical areas where several hydrogen applications are combined together into an integrated hydrogen ecosystem

Prof Das, who is working with other members of CHCCUST including, Prof Arun Kumar Samanta, Prof Siddhartha Sengupta, Prof Ganesh Chandra Nayak and Prof Soumyajit Sen Gupta said, “ IIT (ISM) has a natural motivation to look for solutions to the problem of global warming”.

CHCCUST has recently organized a stakeholder’s meet at IIT (ISM) regarding HVIC during which a presentation of technology for hydrogen through Biomass gasification was made.

Prof Soumyajit Sen Gupta said the meeting which was attended by academic professionals, industrial delegates, research scientists as well as government representatives held deliberations on various aspects of Hydrogen generation.

Dr Ranjith Krishna Pai, scientist E, director, climate change & clean energy division and coordinator of Department of Science and Technology (DST), Coordinator for Hydrogen Valley Platform; Rahul Kulshreshtha working as an enabler at strategic alliance division, office of principal scientific advisor to the government of India; Ugrasen Yadav, associate vice president, process and, Technip energies; Sudhakar Tandon, head (operations and maintenance), Tata Power; Dr Pratik Swaroop Dash, head of coal and coke making research group of Tata Steel; Nitin Gupta, senior general manager, Process Automation India, Schneider Electric India; Ranju Gopal Barman, director technical, Vivarta Greentech Solutions and Kunal Mandal, director (operations), Vivarta Greentech Solutions were present during the stakeholder’s meet cum workshop and discussed crucial issues, including Utilization of Hydrogen in coke making as well as utilizing Hydrogen as Ammonia.

IIT (ISM) director Prof Rajiv Shekhar while addressing emphasized the criticality of academia and industry’s close collaboration and motivated to develop novel ideas to tackle the various challenges in large-scale Hydrogen generation.
