Dhanbad, Nov 11: Prof Arvind Kumar Mishra, head of the department of mining engineering, IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad, has been appointed as the new director of the Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CIMFR).

The post had been vacant for over a year after the retirement of Dr PK  Singh. Shudha Satwa Basu, the director of IIMT Bhubaneswar was given the additional charge of CIMFR Dhanbad for the time being.

Notably, Prof Mishra is considered a ‘Control Rock Blasting’ expert in the country and presently he is imparting training to engineers and workers of Border Road Organization (BRO) to achieve ambitious road projects of the Government of India on the Himalayas in Uttarakhand.

When contacted, Prof Mishra said that he would try to take research to new heights to implement the ‘Make in India’ vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“CIMFR is the main and lone research centre for mining and fuel. Fuel comes on the priority list of the country. My focus would be on search of fuel alternatives and development of new techniques for safe mining in deep mines,” he said.

He further said that he will also focus on promoting research on technique development and people-oriented work.

The CIMFR official sources said that Prof AK Mishra will take charge on November 18 when the acting director, Shudha Satwa  Basu arrives from Bhubaneswar.
