Dhanbad, Sept 16: More than 100 scientists from across the country have congregated here at IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad to deliberate over the multifarious uses of science and technology for ensuring sustainable future.

The three- day technical symposium is being organized by Indian National Young Academy of Sciences (INYAS) in association with IIT ISM and TEXMiN Foundation in which scientists from IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi, IIT (BHU), IIT Ropar, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Jammu, IIT Gauhati, IIT Mumbai and BARC Mumbai besides other institutes will discuss a host of issues, including materials for sustainable future, carbon neutral technology.

Inaugurating the event, Central Institute of Mining & Fuel Research (CIMFR) Dhanbad director Prof AK Mishra said that though in 2015 United Nations adopted 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs), in India we imbibed the values of world being one family through the belief in ‘Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam’ since time immemorial.

“The erratic behavior of the nature witnessed during the recent times brought to the fore the ill effects of excesses carried on nature in mad race of development and highlighted the need for sustainability of growth,” said Prof Mishra .

Prof Mishra exhorted the young scientists to collaborate together to find a solution of each issue affecting the sustainability. “Several scientific interventions are being made like the clean coal technology, electric vehicles etc but more needs to be done,” he said.

Prof J K Pattanayak, officiating director of IIT ISM, while lauding the organizers of the programme for choosing a relevant issue of sustainable development immediately after the G-20 summit ,said that the technology played a key role in transformation that took place after 1960 from traditional economy to knowledge economy. “Science and technology along with innovation can play a significant role in ensuring sustainable development,” he said.
Prof Dheeraj Kumar, deputy director IIT ISM, said he hoped the symposium being organized for the first time at IIT ISM through INYAS would explore the ways of achieving one of 17 sustainable development goals of United Nations.

Rajendra Singh Dhaka, associate professor, department of Physics IIT ISM who is also the chairperson of INYAS gave details of the history and activities of the INYAS.
