IIT ISM’s Prof BC Sarkar elected as district chairman of Mining Engineers’ Association of India

Dhanbad, June 20: Prof Bhabesh C Sarkar of IIT Indian School of Mines(ISM) had been unanimously elected the new chairman of the Mining Engineers’ Association of India (MEAI) Dhanbad Chapter.

Prof Bhabesh C Sarkar took over the charge of MEAI chairman from outgoing chairman Dr Pradeep Kumar Singh, the former director of Central Industrial Mineral Fuel Research (CIMFR). At a function held at Rock Excavation Engineering Block of CIMFR, the newly elected body took over the charge from the outgoing committee.

“The new committee on the occasion decided to celebrate International Yoga Day at IIT ISM lower ground on June 21 at 7 am and will hold a first executive committee meeting of MEAI Dhanbad chapter in the evening at the New Conference Hall, Department of Applied Geology of IIT ISM at 6 pm,” said the new chairman.

He further said that yoga instructor Ajay Kumar Singh and IIT ISM sports teacher Dr DN Acharya would conduct the yoga class.

Prof Sarkar, Department of Applied Geology IIT ISM had recently been awarded the prestigious ’Distinguished Alumnus Award of IIT Kharagpur (West Bengal) in March.

In his 41 years of academic life, Dr Sarkar has served the Mineral Exploration Corporation of India (MECI), Hindustan Zinc Limited and represented the government committee in the ministry of mines as an expert member. Presently, he is the vice-president of the Indian Geological Congress (IGC).

Mining Engineering Association of India (MEAI) is the body of all professionals serving the mineral and mining industry in India. It has a membership strength of more than 6000 experts in regional chapters across the country. Members are mining engineers, Allied engineers, geologists, Metallurgists, geoscientists, environmental engineers, educators, researchers and students.

“MEAI advances the mining community through information exchange, knowledge sharing and professional development,” said Prof Sarkar.

MEAI has international recognition and collaboration with the Society for Mining Metallurgy and Exploration INC (SME USA), Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Committee for Mineral Reserves and International Reporting Standard.
