New Delhi, Jan 15: The Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences’ Department of Clinical Virology (ILBS), New Delhi has found out evidence of early community transmission of Omicron (B1.1.529) variant of Covid-19 in the national capital.

Delhi is currently witnessing a surge of Covid-19 cases driven by the Omicron variant. On Friday, the national capital registered 24,383 COVID-19 cases, down 15.5% from the day before, even as the positivity rate climbed to 30.64 percent, meaning that every third sample obtained for a coronavirus test returned a positive result in the previous 24 hours. There were also 34 fatalities, according to data released by the Delhi health department on Friday.

On Thursday, 28,867 COVID-19 cases were detected, the highest single-day increase since the pandemic began, when the city tested 98,832 people.

However, the coronavirus cases reported on Friday were from 79,578 tests, with a senior government official speculating that the decline in instances could be attributable to lower testing.

“The change in testing rules is to blame for the low number of tests. The (central) government released an advisory earlier this week stating that asymptomatic individuals undergoing surgical/non-surgical invasive procedures should not be checked unless symptoms occur “According to the official,

The active cases in the city stand at 92,273, of which 64,831 are in home isolation. The number of containment zones is 27,531
