Ranchi, Jan.15: A mother has sold her baby in Jharkhand. This was exposed after the anti-human trafficking unit (AHTU) arrested a Mumbai based lady, Nikhat Parveen, who claimed to have purchased a 3-day old baby boy from a lady in Sonahatu, hardly 50 km from Jharkhand capital, for Rs 22,000.

The process of arresting was completed on Friday after the CISF handed over the lady to AHTU. On Thursday, when the lady was attempting to enter Birsa Munda Airport to board a Mumbai-bound Indigo flight, she failed to produce any documentary evidence to prove her claim on the baby.

Apart from this, the woman, who had landed at Birsa Munda Airport on January 11, had also not mentioned the baby on her journey ticket that she had purchased online on January 12 to take-off for Mumbai on January 13.

AHTU chief in district cum officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station, Shailesh Kumar, confirmed the fact saying that the name of the mother who sold the baby is Ratni Kumari.

“After verification, it came to our knowledge that the mother Ratni Kumari is very poor. Today, we will take her statement in detail during the course of investigation,” he said, confirming the situation.

A police official said after the arrest of the lady, it is being ascertained how the Mumbai- based lady came in contact with a poor mother in Jharkhand and dared to take the baby without any documentation.

“Primary investigation suggests that the 36-yr-old lady was arrested and sent to jail. She resides near Gaji Mahal Upper Nice School in Thane in Maharashtra in her own house with her husband Javed Sheik, two daughters and mother-in-law. Her parents reside in Hazaribagh. Her husband works in a hotel as a waiter and also drives an auto rickshaw for additional income,” the police official said.

Investigating officer of the case Durga Gupta could not be contacted for her comment. She did not take calls despite several attempts.

Contacted deputy commissioner of Ranchi Chhavi Ranjan for his comment, he expressed his concern over the situation adding that police is taking proper action in the matter and trying to ascertain how come a lady staying in Mumbai knew about poor mother in Sonahatu.
