Islamabad, Aug 22: Following Imran Khan’s filing of an anticipatory bail motion to avoid arrest on the terrorism-related allegations brought against him, the Islamabad High Court on Monday granted transit bail to him until August 25, according to Geo TV.
The pre-arrest bail application was submitted on behalf of the ousted PM by the legal team of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) party, of which Khan is the chairman. Khan said in the plea that he is prepared to appear before the court whenever called, according to reports in Pakistani media.
The plea also said that Imran Khan has no prior convictions and no criminal history, according to The Nation. Pakistan’s political unrest meanwhile worsened when news broke on Sunday that Imran Khan would be detained on terrorism-related charges by the Shehbaz Sharif-led administration.
The terrorism accusations stem from a speech Khan gave on Saturday in Islamabad, where he threatened to sue judges and police personnel and claimed that one of his close advisers had been tortured after his incarceration.
Imran Khan was charged with violating Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, which imposes penalties for terrorist conduct, as a result of remarks he made during a rally in Islamabad last Saturday (August 20).
