New Delhi, Feb 17: In the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia on Friday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, India’s off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin reached the milestone of 700 first-class dismissals.

As Ashwin defeated Marnus Labuschagne for 18 in his ninth over, he accomplished the feat. Ashwin then took another important wicket in three deliveries, dismissing Australia’s Steve Smith for a duck.

In the first Test at Nagpur, Ashwin utterly destroyed the Australian batting order, taking a total of eight wickets, including three in the first innings and five in the second. In the days leading up to the second game in Delhi, Ashwin has once again established himself as one of Australia’s most challenging clients.

In 2011 in Delhi, Ashwin played in his first Test match against the West Indies. For his bowling efforts (3/81 & 6/47) as India triumphed by five wickets, he was named player of the match. Moreover, the 36-year-old is second only to Muralidaran in Tests in terms of player of the series honours with 9. (11).

According to the ICC Test bowlers and all-rounder rankings, Ashwin is presently placed second. Wilfred Rhodes of England, a seamer who played domestic cricket for more than 32 years, holds the record for most wickets in first-class cricket with 4204.

Ashwin now has 99 Test wickets against Australia. This includes his numbers both at home and away.
