New Delhi, Feb 22: Ashton Agar of Australia will no longer be part of the team and will no longer play in the current Border Gavaskar Trophy match against India. Agar has returned to Perth and will play for Western Australia in the current Sheffield Shield, according to cricket.com.au.
After David Warner and Josh Hazlewood, who was forced to withdraw from the series owing to injuries, Agar is the third member of the team to return home. Australia chose Todd Murphy and Matt Kuhnemann, who weren’t even on the first roster, for the first two Test matches instead of Agar.
“(Agar) has worked incredibly hard, he’s done his absolute best to support the team. We acknowledge all the work he’s done, he’s worked his backside off. In the first Test it was a very close call (between Murphy, Agar and Swepson) as to what spin structure we went with. The question mark of whether the two off-spinners could go together,” Tony Dodemaide, Australia’s selector, was quoted as saying.
Next week, the 29-year-old will make a comeback to the field for Western Australia’s Shield game against Tasmania at the WACA.
According to Cricket Australia, Australia’s skipper Pat Cummins had to fly home last week owing to a ‘severe family ailment.’ But, Cummins is anticipated to make a comeback prior to the third Test of the four-match series, which is scheduled to begin March 1 at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore.
