New Delhi, March 14: In place of Pat Cummins, Steve Smith will captain Australia in their forthcoming one-day international series against India. Prior of Australia’s three-match ODI series against India, which begins March 17, Cummins has chosen to remain in Australia.

In order to care for his mother, who passed away from breast cancer during the fourth game of the series at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Cummins will remain in Australia after leaving India following the second Test match of the series in Delhi.

Cummins will remain in Australia and miss the three-match ODI series against India, according to Australia head coach Andrew McDonald.

“Pat won’t be coming back, he’s still taking care of what’s happened back home. Our thoughts are with Pat and his family as they go through that grieving process,” said McDonald.

Smith, who assumed the captaincy for the next two Tests of the series, will lead the team in Cummins’ absence. After suffering an elbow injury in the second Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, Australia’s opener David Warner has been deemed fit for the ODI series as well. In addition, Mitchell Marsh will rejoin the team after recovering from an ankle ailment.

Josh Hazlewood will not be playing for Australia because of an Achilles issue. In the meantime, Nathan Ellis was only recalled after Jhye Richardson’s hamstring injury made her ineligible for the series.

India won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after defeating Australia 2-1 in the four-game series with a draw at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The World Test Championship final between the two teams will take place in June.

Schedule for ODI series:

1st ODI: March 17 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai

2nd ODI: March 19 at YS Raja Reddy Stadium in Vizag

3rd ODI: Wednesday March 22 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai
