New Delhi, Sept 25: The decision by India all-rounder Deepti Sharma to run out England’s Charlotte Dean at the non-end striker’s because she was backing up too much before the ball was released has split the cricketing community and sparked many divergent comments on social media.

This dismissal method was first used by Indian cricket star Vinoo Mankad, who ran out Australian Bill Brown at the non-end, striker’s earning it the nickname “Mankad.” Despite the fact that many cricket players contend it goes against the game’s spirit, it is entirely lawful according to the sport’s rules.

The ICC altered various playing rules earlier this week, including running out of the non-striker.

The rule stated “The Playing Conditions follow the Laws in moving this method of effecting a Run out from the ‘Unfair Play’ section to the ‘Run out’ section.”

The likes of Wasim Jaffer, Sehwag, Monty Panesar and Tabraiz Shamsi defended Deepti and said it is totally within the laws of the game. On the other hand, there are few players who have also criticised Deepti for resorting to this mode of dismissal.

Notably, India was asked to bat first by England, and they were swept out for 169. Renuka Singh (4/29) bowled an outstanding stint that dropped England to 65/7 as they chased 170. Knocks from captain Amy Jones (28) and Charlotte Dean (47) pushed England close to a victory, but in the end, India held their composure to claim a 3-0 series win.
