New Delhi, Nov 18: The first T20I encounter of the three-match series between India and New Zealand had to be abandoned due to heavy rain in Wellington on Friday.
At Wellington’s Sky Stadium, where the coin toss was scheduled to take place, torrential rain was falling at 11:30 PM IST. With additional thunderstorms and heavy rain forecasted, there was little prospect for an improvement in the forecast.
The teams were scheduled to face off in their first game since being eliminated in the semifinals of the recently finished T20 World Cup. New Zealand was defeated by Pakistan, while eventual winners England eliminated India.
Both teams are able to quickly put those setbacks behind them thanks to the New Zealand series, which consists of three T20 games and three ODIs. Both nations will be anticipating the 50-over World Cup in India and next year having put the T20 World Cup behind them.
In order to give a younger group the opportunity to travel internationally, India rested several of its frontline players for this series. Despite missing fast bowler Trent Boult, New Zealand is almost at full strength.
