Cape Town, Jan 14: South Africa defeated India in the third and final test by 7 wickets to clinch the series 2-1 at Newlands in Cape Town on Friday.
India won the first test by 113 runs but South Africa registered wins in the second and third test to clinch the three-match series.
South Africa opened the fourth day at 101 for 2 with an easy goal of 212 to chase after captain Dean Elgar and Keegan Petersen put on a 78-run partnership. Elgar, on the other hand, was out with the final ball of the day, a strangle down the leg side as he edged seamer Jasprit Bumrah to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. India had been enraged when Elgar was granted a reprieve from ball-tracking technology when he was on 22. India batted first and scored 223, South Africa 210, and India 198 in the second innings.
South Africa completed the task in 63.3 overs after resuming day 101/2, with important contributions from Keegan Petersen (82), Rassie van der Dussen (41 not out), and Temba Bavuma (32 not out). Petersen was the only player to be dismissed on the day, as he was bowled by Shardul Thakur after playing one on to his stumps.
With this victory, South Africa takes a 2-1 lead in the three-match test series. They came back from a 1-0 deficit in the first test to win the series.
