New Delhi: The Opposition INDIA alliance has emerged victorious in the by-elections for 13 Assembly seats across seven states, winning two seats and leading in nine others, marking a significant triumph against the BJP-led NDA.
In Punjab, AAP’s Mohinder Bhagat secured the Jalandhar West seat with a margin of over 23,000 votes. West Bengal sees Trinamool Congress candidates leading in four constituencies, leaving BJP candidates trailing.
Himachal Pradesh has Congress candidates ahead in two seats, while BJP’s Ashish Sharma leads in Hamirpur. In Uttarakhand, Congress candidates are leading in both Badrinath and Manglaur seats.
In Madhya Pradesh, Congress’s Dheeran Shah Invati holds a lead of over 4,000 votes in the Amarwara seat. Bihar sees JD(U)’s Kaladhar Prasad Mandal leading in Rupauli, and in Tamil Nadu, DMK’s Anniyur Siva leads by over 10,000 votes in the Vikravandi assembly seat.
These by-elections are the first since the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where the BJP won 240 seats, 32 short of a majority. Despite this, the NDA managed to cross the halfway mark with a total tally of 293 seats. The Congress-led INDIA bloc secured 232 seats, showcasing the intense competition in the current political landscape.
