New Delhi, Dec 20: India has moved up to third place in the world in terms of scientific publications, according to Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh, who made the announcement on Sunday following an evaluation of the ministry’s operations.
India moved up from the seventh place in 2010 to third place in 2020, according to the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Science & Engineering Indicators 2022 report of the United States, according to Singh.
The academic production of India increased from 60,555 papers in 2010 to 1,49,213 papers in 2020, he stated.
According to a senior official, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) would likely receive 20% more funding in the forthcoming Union Budget 2023–24 than it did the previous year.
The DST received 6,002 crores in the previous budget, or 42% of the overall 14,217 crores allotted to the Ministry of Science and Technology. 5,636 crores were given to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (or 40%), whereas 2,581 crores were given to the Department of Biotechnology (or 18%).
According to him, India is currently third in the world for the number of PhDs in engineering and science.
He claimed that during the previous three years, the number of patents awarded to Indian scientists at the India Patent Office (IPO) climbed from 2,511 in 2018–19 to 4,003 in 2019–20 and 5,629 in 2020–21.

The United States government’s independent National Science Foundation promotes foundational study and training in all engineering and science disciplines outside of medicine.
Notably, according to the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2022 brought out by World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), India’s GII ranking has also improved significantly from 81st in 2014 to 40th position in 2022.
