India reports 16,764 new Covid cases, Omicron tally surges to 1,270

New Delhi, Dec 31: India has reported 16,764 new COVID-19 cases and 220 deaths in the last 24 hours, informed the Union Health Ministry on Friday.

With the new Covid cases, India’s active caseload has now risen to 91,361, constituting 0.26% of the total cases. India also logged 309 fresh Omicron cases, taking the total tally of such cases in the country to 1,270, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

Maharashtra has recorded the highest number of Omicron cases at 450, followed by Delhi at 320, Kerala at 109, Gujarat at 97, Rajasthan at 69, Telangana at 62. A total of 23 states and Union territories have reported cases of Omicron.

The country also recorded 7,585 recoveries today, taking the total number of recoveries to 3,42,66,363.  The recovery rate in the country stands at 98.36%. Also, 220 people succumbed to the coronavirus disease in the same period and the country’s death toll climbed to 481,080.

The weekly positivity rate in the country is 0.89%, which remains lesser than 1% for the last 47 days. The daily positivity rate is 1.34% which remains lesser than 2% for the last 88 days.

India has conducted as many as 67.78 crore COVID-19 tests so far and has administered around 144.54 crore vaccine so far under the nationwide vaccination drive.
